May is Now Blue Star Mothers Month in Massachusetts!

On Tuesday May 5, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and Lieutenant Governor Karen Polito signed a proclamation voted by our State Legislature declaring May to be Blue Star Mothers Month in Massachusetts! All three of Massachusetts' Blue Star Mothers chapters participated in the signing ceremony at the State House in Boston. In our first pic (right), Governor Charlie Baker signs the proclamation surrounded by Blue Star Moms and event participants. Behind Baker is State Senator Marc Pacheco, who guided the enabling bill through our legislature. To Pacheco's right (so left in the pic) is Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito. Behind them is Secretary of Veterans' Affairs Franciso Ureña. (He visited our meeting last March; see below.) All three of our supporting state officers are in the second pic (left), and finally, our third pic (right again, below) shows the group of Chapter 1 members who made the trek to the State House for this ceremony.

Welcome to our Website!

We're Massachusetts Chapter 1 of the Blue Star Mothers of America - Mothers who currently have or had children serving in the U.S. Military. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) service organization, chartered by the U.S. congress, supporting each other, our children, and everyone who serves in our military while promoting patriotism. We welcome fathers, family, and friends of our servicepeople as our associate members.

Our next meeting of 2015 will be held on the usual third Wednesday of the month which is August 19 at our usual time (7:00 PM) and the usual place (Leominster Veterans' Center) - find the clickable map on the Meetings and Events page. The official agenda will be posted soon on the Members' Page. See you there!!

At 5:30, 90 minutes before our March meeting started, we hosted Francisco A. Ureña, Secretary of Mass' Department of Veterans' Services. We provided refreshments and coffee for the about 40 veterans and veterans' service organizations people who attended. Mr. Ureña spoke and answered questions for the hour and a half until our meeting started. It was an extremely helpful session. If you are a veteran, or a family member of a veteran, for more help you can go to . After this presentation, Trisha Blanchet, Founder and President of Operation Delta Dog, spoke to us about their work taking rescue dogs and working them up to service dogs for veterans. Our business meeting followed. It was a very full and worthwhile evening!

The Texas Roadhouse Restaurant in Leominster continues to support and promote our Chapter. At one event at the restaurant, customers could buy a star with our chapter's name on it at the desk when they came in, or left after dinner. Next they displayed our Chapter Christmas Tree, hung with donated Roadhouse Gift Cards. We thank them so much for their support of our support of our military heroes! The Texas Roadhouse restaurant is at 106 New Lancaster Road in Leominster just west of the intersection with I-190; their phone number is 978-537-7427. See y'all there!

Our chapter has a Facebook page - You can check it out Here . We'll still keep official records and photo galleries on this official chapter website, but the Facebook page lets members (and other interested folks!) post comments and pictures from events as they happen. If you like our page, let us and everyone know by clicking this "Like" button:

Members: If you have ideas for taking advantage of the Facebook page, post them on the page so we can try them out. Let's try to get the page full of interesting comments and pictures!

A change in the law (since we're a congressionally-chartered organization, after all), passed by congress and signed by President Obama, allows Foster Mothers, Grandmothers, and Female Legal Guardians of active duty and retired servicepeople to join us as Full Members. Even if you don't fit into any of these categories, you're welcome to join as an Associate Member (and even Dads fit into this slot!). Come to our meeting and look us over - we think you'll decide to join.
